If you happen to be a long time follower or friend of mine,
you know I LOVE ALL THINGS DISNEY WORLD!!

We have been a number of times,

(Last time just my husband and I went without kids and it was FAB!),

And each time I love it more and more.

This time is extra special, though.

You see, our newest 2 additions have never been, so this will be their first time!!

So we couldn't just say, "hey, we're going to Disney World for spring break.".

Oh no!

We have to do it right.

So we told our kids we're going to Florida to the beach (which isn't exactly a lie since we will be
spending one day at the beach!).

We have rented a house and on the first evening there, we're going to play charades.

(You totally get where I'm going with this, right?)

I'll volunteer to go first and act out: "WE'RE GOING TO DISNEY WORLD!"

Best game of charades ever!

I also have little gifts bags to give each of them.

The bags have a small Disney stuffed animal, a gift card for spending, a Disney shirt, and autograph
books. I'm so excited I can hardly stand it!!

We'll spend one day in each park and one day at Cocoa Beach, too. And the house we rented has an
inground pool, so that should keep the kids busy on our off days, too.

Have you been to Disney World and
how did you tell your kids?

Life has been a weeeeee bit busy around here.

You see, we've added TWO kids to our family!!!!!

A few years ago, we decided that God was calling us to become foster care parents, and little did we know that He had a BIGGER plan!

(Doesn't He Always?!)

Anyhow, after spending over a year taking classes to get licensed, our first placement was a sibling group. A boy and a girl who needed a forever home.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">And we couldn't say no.

Because we love them.

And because we couldn't imagine sending them away.

So, here we are now. <span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">A family of 6.

And who knows where God will take this journey.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">We're just along for the ride :) Rickihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10245266276704235321noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5562822527416296548.post-56423113272274760332013-06-16T20:59:00.000-04:002013-06-16T20:59:24.932-04:00A Star Wars Kind of Father's Day

When my girls and I were deciding what to do for my hubby for Father's Day, we tried to think of things that HE would enjoy.

Besides Phish, (and if you don't know who Phish is, then good for you! Some day, I'll write about how this band has made it's way into my life, and into the lives of my children. Until then...), my hubby has one lifelong love.

Star Wars.

It started when he first saw the movie at age 3, and has continued ever since.

I'm sure if he thought I would allow it, he would be one of those guys that dresses up in authentic Stormtrooper gear and parades himself around at various Star Wars conventions.

But he doesn't think I would allow it.

He may or may not be right.

BUT, on Father's Day, it's all about him!

My girls ask for them just about every week.

... like forever.

Actually, it's a long story, but the short version is, I wanted to write about my kids on my blog today.

So I am.

Wednesday was the last day of school for my girls.

Faith is going to be a second grader, and Addy is going to be a fourth grader.

YIKES!

Each year seems shorter and shorter.

#panickymomhere

We started our day off with Thank You notes and Gift Cards for the Teachers and Bus Drivers.

The Teachers got Target Gift Cards that said, 'Thank You For Keeping Us On TARGET This year'.

The Bus Drivers got Subway Gift Cards. They didn't say anything clever.

Because ALL of my clever ideas come from Pinterest, and I couldn't find a cute bus driver/subway phrase.

Oh well...hope they enjoy the gift cards anyway :)

Anyhow, here are a few pics from our 'Last-Day-Of-School' Fun!

I want to share with you a journey that I have been on!

Some of you have been reading this blog a while, so you know the struggles I have had with my weight.

For those who don't know, here's a short recap:

Been fat all my life.

Seriously.

All. My. Life.

Chubby baby, chubby kid, fat teenager, and obese adult.

I had tried every diet available. Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, counting calories, Dr. Phil diet, liquid diet...you name it!

And finally, this past September, I realized I needed to change my life.

Not another diet, but a life change.

And I did.

Here are my before and after pics:

This is what real weight loss does.

It changes your body. Inside and out!

I have learned to eat food that is good for my body.

I have overcome my addiction to soda, sugar and processed foods. And if you had told me that was even a remote possibility a year ago, I would have politely called you crazy. And then eaten a cookie.

And I know that if I could do this, so can you!

So can anyone!

I will help you!

I lost my weight by using Advocare products. I started with a 24 day challenge bundle.

And if you want to know more about that, I would love to share it with you.

But if you can't or don't want to do Advocare, you can STILL do it!!!

It's about committing to a life change. And deciding that no matter what, you won't turn back. Mistakes will happen. You'll give into cravings. You'll eat chicken wings and onion rings.

BUT DON'T GIVE UP!!!!!

Dust yourself off and get back at it the next day.

Be intentional and don't make excuses! Decide that instead of coming up with a million reasons that you can't do it or why it won't work, you'll figure out a way to make it work!!

Because you deserve it!

I feel better than I have in 20 years.

And I'm not being dramatic....for realz!

Let's do this!

Rickihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10245266276704235321noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5562822527416296548.post-14344883395843201702012-12-13T08:38:00.000-05:002012-12-13T08:38:26.776-05:00Disney WorldOh friends.

Lots of folks have been asking lots of questions about any tips I might have and things I like/don't like.

So here are a few thoughts:

-We booked directly through the Disney World website this time. It worked out fine and we got a great deal (free Disney Dining Plan!). I *never* go to Disney without getting a great deal. Right now they have a few deals for winter that are decent. You can check them out here

My girls and Minnie

-As usual, I used All Ears to help plan most of our vacation. They always have up-to-date info. and the amount of knowledge all things Disney is beyond amazing!

Princess elf ears

-We stayed at Caribbean Beach Resort this time. If I'm honest, it wasn't my fave. It is HUGE and sprawled out. If we had gone in summer, I think we would have enjoyed it more because the pool looked fun. But it seems a little older than the others and just not as nice. I must say that the staff was wonderful, though, and since you don't spend a lot of time in the room, it was fine.

Addy learning some archery

We have stayed at Port Orleans (Riverside), and All Star Movies and liked those as well. We have also stayed off property and enjoyed that (but staying on property is ALWAYS better!)

-This time, we had groceries delivered to our room which helps in eating better and saving money! We had bananas, water bottles, Gatorade, juice boxes, and crackers in the room and to take to the parks with us. MUCH cheaper than buying those items at Disney World and we didn't have to pack them, (which is great because the airlines are strict on the 50 lbs. and it is very expensive to pay the overage fee!). The grocery service we used was Garden Grocer and while it does have a delivery fee and a $40 minimum purchase, it was still worth it when you consider a single bottle of water is about $3 at Disney. (And I drink A LOT of water these days!).

BUT, if you don't want to pay the extra fee, just hop over to Hollywood Studios and see the Osbourne Family Spectacle of Lights! It IS included in admission and it really is magical.

-One of the fun things we did this time is visit some of the resorts we hadn't been to yet, and eat at their on-site restaurants!

Little girl in a Big chair at the Wilderness Lodge

At The Wilderness Lodge, I would *highly* recommend Whispering Canyons Cafe! Servers are lots of fun, they have all-you-can-drink milkshakes (included with your meal!), and the food is yummy! After you're done, walk around the beautiful resort and then take a boat ride back to Magic Kingdom!

We also ate at Beaches and Cream at the Yacht and Beach club. It's like a true 50's style Diner...jukebox and all! We sat at the counter, which the girls thought was fab!

"I can't imagine what you've been through."

"I'm so sorry for all that you've had to endure."

"How are you dealing with all of this?"

These are some of the statements/questions I deal with on a daily basis.

Our community is large, but still small enough that lots of people know about the year I've had.

(Or maybe I just know A LOT of people...)

Sometimes, I think I don't know how to answer that question.

How do you deal with losing both parents, unexpectedly, within three months of each other?

But I know it's not a question of "how".

It's a "who".

Jesus.

Now before you think I'm getting all spiritual on you, and you click away, I want to encourage you to keep reading.

This post may look different than you think.

You see, I know a lot of people don't want to hear people talking about Jesus.

It makes them uncomfortable.

Because maybe they've had a bad experience with 'Christians' before.

Or maybe they assume we think we're perfect or better than everyone else.

(Which, let me clarify, isn't true!)

There could be lots of reasons.

But let me tell you about the Jesus I know.

The Jesus I know is solid as a rock.

When everything else was crazy, He was constant.

He was the One that never left.

His love never failed me. Not even once.

It's like an ocean that never goes dry. I could swim in it the rest of my life and I'll never run out of His love.

That's what True Love looks like.

Because at some time, everyone and everything will disappoint me. My husband, my kids, my friends...life.

But not Him.

His love is the *only* thing that I can count on forever.

And that's what has carried me, (literally), through this past year.

Another thing about Jesus,

The Jesus I know loves you.

He loves you just the way you are. Right now. Without changing one thing about yourself.

He is wide open.

He is ready to catch anything you can throw at Him.

Doubt? He's got it.

Insecurity? No sweat!

Anything else? Already covered.

You see, the things that keep us from Jesus is our stuff. It has nothing to do with Him.

He doesn't ask you for anything.

The only thing you need to do, is fall into Him.

He'll take care of the rest.

If there's something in you that needs to change, He'll do that.

No need to wait until you're perfect or until you've got it together.

Because you never will.

That's what He is for.

But I can promise you that once you do Fall into Him, you will fall in love with Him.

You will be so carried away that you can't imagine life without Him.

You will know a joy that you never imagined.

Even in the most horrific of times.

Because His love trumps all of that.

If you don't know His love in this way, then you don't know the real Jesus.

And if you don't know the real Jesus, then why not?

What are you waiting for?

Don't let another day go by without experiencing True Love.

Talk to Him.

Tell Him you want to know that kind of love.

His love.

He'll take care of the rest.

But seriously, life has been hectic.

I feel like cheer and football rule my world right now.

Well, that and sick kids, doctors appointments, and teacher conferences.

And by the way, my girls are ROCK STARS!

(In school anyway...)

They both had great reports and I couldn't be more proud.

But things at home are a little less....well...easy.

We are going through some discipline issues and it's hard.

For all of us.

I am glad my girls are so polite at school and respect their teachers etc.

But at home, it's another story.

Fighting, yelling, throwing things on the ground...it's like I live with 2 teenage girls.

But they're only 8 and 6.

I'm not ready for this.

And sometimes I feel like I'm doing a horrible job at raising them to be self sufficient, respectful, appreciative adults.

I think if there were report cards for moms, I'd be getting a D... (okay, maybe a C. But definitely not above a C).

Anyone else have this issue?

I'm at a loss.

Grounding them is what gets to them most. But even that is wearing off.

And I feel like I'm the one who is punished, too, because I have to miss all of my fun.

Any advice?
Every year, my in-laws have the girls over to do a leaf jump in their yard.

The girls LOVE it!

{Aren't they the BEST grandparents??}

Quote of the day: When I said that it sounded like their lucky day (because they had gotten the girls ice cream earlier in the day), Addy's reply was, "Every day is a lucky day when we're with Granny!"

It melted my heart to hear, in her own words, just how much she loves being with her....and I'm pretty sure she guaranteed herself ice cream for life with granny after that comment :)

This year, we also combined it with celebrating my (Wonderful) husband's birthday with dinner and an ice cream cake.

Here are some pics from the fun afternoon:

I mentioned before that I was going to my friend's annual Halloween/Costume party and that I couldn't think of costumes for us.

The theme was 'A Night at The Movies'.

But last Monday, (kind of last minute since the party was Friday), I came up with an idea.

Thanks to Ebay and fast shipping, we were able to get what we needed.

And so, we went as The Grinch and Cindy Lou Who.

Braids by me :)

And guess what?

I WON the Best Costume prize for the girls!!!!

Now, if you had read my previous post, you would know that this is a big deal because Amy For Him ALWAYS wins this prize.

{And BTW, her husband won for the men this year, AGAIN, so we didn't completely take them over}

{And actually, their costumes were once again, AH-MAZ-ING! So, they kind of deserve to win}

Frodo and Gandolph....see what I mean?? Crazy Good!!

It seriously was such a fun party! A scavenger hunt (yes, we all went to Wal-greens in costume), games, snacks, and even movie themed prizes.

The hostess with the mostest! Love this girl...and her parties!!

I can't wait to see what next years theme will be!

What are you going as for Halloween this year??Rickihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10245266276704235321noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5562822527416296548.post-38885031667706592592012-10-16T16:46:00.001-04:002012-10-16T16:46:17.758-04:00Here's What I Have To Say

As you all know, I am on a journey towards a healthier, fitter, skinnier me.

And I am succeeding!!

It almost feels wrong to write that.

Why?

Because I have failed so many times in the past.

And because it sounds like bragging.

But it should be okay to brag about that. Right?

I think, like lots of women, I have gotten use to putting myself last.

'The kids need things for school and activities, so I'll just put off buying those gym shoes I need.'

Or, 'I need to be home to help my family in the evening, so I don't have time to go walking.'

Or, 'I feel bad for making my family eat the way I need to to be healthy, so I'll just eat what they like.'

Basically, we find all the reasons in the world to put others in front of our own needs.

We may have even meant to get back to us one day, but that day just kept getting pushed further and further away.

And then finally, we forgot about our needs altogether.

But not anymore!

I have decided that I am just as important as everyone else.

My health matters.

Just as much as my kids cheer leading, or the Christmas gifts they want, or my husbands new CD's.

It matters just as much as the way they want to eat, or the way that they want to spend our time.

It matters.

And so, I'm not going to feel guilty about it.

Not about spending the money on myself, or about taking the time I need to focus on me, or choosing to cook the food that I think is best for me.

And it feels good!

I feels freeing.

And I think, it's why I finally feel like I'm succeeding.

Because I'm not trying to get healthy working around everyone else's schedule, or needs or on anyone else's terms.

This is about ME!

And I'm not just okay with that.

I'm GREAT with that!

Tell me, have you struggled with this? Or DO you struggle with this?Rickihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10245266276704235321noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5562822527416296548.post-34048794402892387632012-10-11T07:00:00.000-04:002012-10-11T07:00:02.844-04:00A (Homemade) Cough Remedy That Actually Works!

So I mentioned yesterday that I have bronchitis along with a sinus infection.

Good times.

But since I HATE to take OTC meds for that kind of stuff, because they never seem to help anyway, I was just kind of dealing with it until I could get to the doctor.

But I came across this home remedy on Pinterest and I happened to have all the stuff already in the pantry.

So I gave it a try.

And By Golly IT WORKED!

Let me warn you that it's pretty nasty.

I just held my nose and drank it down. (Remember to only take 1 TBSP at a time!)

And I wouldn't give it to my kids (because of the Cayenne Pepper. But if your kids like hot stuff...go for it!)

But it totally did the job, and WAY better than those OTC meds.

Plus, no side effects like drowsiness or hyper activity.

So next time you feel a sore throat or cough coming on, give this a try first!

I'll be linking up with WFMW at We Are THAT Family, too!

My To-Do list is approximately 7 miles long right now.

I just keep adding and adding, but not much is getting done.

{Including Blog posts, which I am waaaaay behind on. Sorry!}

At the top of my list right now are:

Get stuff for my daughter to make football signs tonight, (probably should get on that...)
Pick up and take my prescriptions (I have bronchitis..yay.)
Clean my house (who am I kidding?)
Purchase a camera and laptop (I have been procrastinating on this for months)
Fill out and mail in Red Tape paper work kind of stuff (HATE this!)
Decide what I'm making and then make something for a Football/Cheer Bonfire this weekend (which will probably end up being something pre-made and purchased at the grocery five minutes before we go)
Replace the light that went out in our bathroom a week ago (did someone say my make-up looks weird?)
Call and cancel the Netflix that we planned to only have for the free trial month that we have now paid for for 6 months (my bad...)
Figure out what my husband and I are going to be for the Halloween party we are going to next week (does it even matter?? We all know Amy For Him and her hubby are going to win the prize anyway!)
Take the junk that is left over from my garage sale, IN JULY, to Goodwill (so I can put more junk that is currently *inside* my house out there)
And a ton of other random things that will probably still be on the list in 2 months.

But while I haven't been doing those things, here are the things I have been doing:

Snuggling with my kiddo's while we all take turns getting sick (it's that time of year!)
Exercising (and I'm not even lying!!)
Spending time with friends and family who need it (because I have been so blessed by others when I have needed it!)
Having fun with my kids and all of their 101 activities (they will only want me around for so long...)
Making healthy meals and feeding my body the way it is meant to be fed (down 20 pounds so far! Ask me how if you want to know!)
Enjoying all the new fall TV shows (if you know me, you know how excited I am about this!)

So while I know I have lots to get done, I think my list of things I have been doing is pretty awesome. And the truth is, I'd much rather be doing all of that!

So tell me, what's on your To-Do list? And what are you doing instead of doing it?

And part of that are snacks.

Here's what I used to snack on:

-Crackers with cream cheese and pepper jelly (one of my faves!)
-Movie theater butter popcorn
-Sugar cereal (pretty much any kind)
-Pizza rolls
-Brownies
-Cookies
-Slices of cheddar cheese
-Cheez-It's
-Candy
-Frito's
-Pringles
-Donuts
-Nacho's

Pretty healthy, huh?

Obviously, I had to do an overhaul here.

But I still have to have snacks that are tasty, satisfying and take little to no time to prepare.

Here are some things that I have been substituting the above list with now:

-Granny Smith Apples, (perfect blend of sweet and tart!)
-Hard Boiled Eggs (I keep them in the fridge all the time now!)
-Almonds
-Blueberries
-Raspberries
-Peaches
-Greek Yogurt (Chobani tends to be my favorite)
-Guacamole or hummus and sliced peppers or carrots
-Almond Butter...sometimes with apples or sometimes on whole grain toast

Ummmm, and that's about it.

So, as you can see I have a pretty good variety, but I think I need more choices. After all, I'm eating snacks about 3 times per day, so I go through this list pretty often.

Does anyone have any good ideas for some? I'm trying to keep them low carb, and low calorie if that gives you some direction.

Thanks!!

I will be linking up with We Are THAT Family for WFMW.

Soooo, since I posted about my food addiction I've been busy making some life changes.

The main thing is praying about changing the way I see food, and then actually putting that into action.

I signed up for a program called Advocare. I knew a lot of people who were doing it, and most of them were having success.

Not just with weight loss, but with feeling their best.

So, I decided to give it a try.

They have this thing called a 24 day challenge, and so that's where I'm starting.

I like it because I am eating real food, but the kind of food I should be eating....whole foods, things that will help my body instead of hurting it.

It is helping to teach me about what makes my body feel better and run better. And the best part is, I have never felt hungry, which is something I was afraid of.

I have finished the "cleanse" portion, and am now on to the "max" phase. Basically, I'm on day 12 and so far, I've lost 16 pounds and 8 inches!!!!

Oh. My. Word.

BUT, even better than that, is that I feel great!!

My mind is clearer.

I am not tired all the time like I used to be.

I am not craving sugar or fried foods.

I am not having all the stomach issues I have struggled with for so long.

And I feel good about myself.

It has been a long time since I could say that.

But it's true.

Because, you see, I realized that for so long, I have not even been looking at myself.

I mean, of course I do my makeup and hair in the mirror, and I check my outfit before I leave the house.

But I never really look at myself. Like, look into my own eyes and actually see me.

Why?

I don't know. I think it's just because I was afraid I wouldn't like who I saw there.

But the other day, when I realized this, I just took a moment to really look at myself. And you know what?

I like me.

I try to be kind and giving whenever I can.

I really care about other people and how they feel.

I am a loyal and true friend.

I have a pretty good sense of humor (if I do say so myself...and I do :) )

I try to stay positive.

I am smart.

I am always trying to be a teachable person.

I am a good mommy.

I am a faithful and loving wife.

And I genuinely love Christ with every fiber of my being.

So maybe I don't exactly love the physical part of my looks, and I know I still have things that I need to change, (like this food addiction I'm working through), but overall, I can honestly say that I like me. And that is a HUGE step.

Not afraid to really look in that mirror anymore.

And, if after all of this, if that's the only thing I get...I feel pretty great about that!

I started a 10 day cleanse last Thursday, and was doing great...until I got a flu like bug a couple of days ago.

I think it's safe to say I'm cleaned out :(

I'm gonna go ahead and finish out this cleanse, though, just because I said I would. Then it's on to the rest of the 24 day challenge I'm on.

Which is basically eating the way I should and am planning to eat for the rest of my life.

But I'm excited for the "cleanse" period to be over so I can throw some whole grain bread and a little dairy back into the mix.

It's the small things...

And also, I had to cancel a MUCH NEEDED hair appointment because of being sick.

Not happy about that at all!

My hair has been in a constant state of pony tail for the last 3 months.

It's time for a new look.

And my husband thinks he might be getting sick, too, now.

Which is NOT good because we have big plans for this Saturday to go to COSI to see the new Lego Castle Adventure.

I had to miss last years COSI blogger event because of sickness and I am willing all of us to be well so we don't miss this years.

AND, I have had no time to put into Halloween costumes for the kids or myself, which makes me nervous because I usually start that whole process in July.

Who knows...all of us may end up being ghosts this year.

I think it's time for the sheet with eye holes to come back anyhow. It's retro and cool. Right?!

Anyhow...it's just been one of those weeks.

What's your week been like?

Often, I am asked by other moms who are looking for childcare, what they should be looking for, what questions to ask etc.

Here is a list of things to consider when looking for in a home child care provider:

1. What kind of experience does your provider have? I know this seems basic, but it's an important question. Do they have any education or early education classes under their belt? Have they worked with children, (other than their own), before? Do they have references you can speak with?

2. What is The Home Environment like? This is a BIG deal. Is it child friendly? Do they have plenty of toys and play equipment to entertain the children? Is it clean? Is it safe? Are there animals in the house? Do they, (or anyone else in the house), smoke? All are things you should know before making a decision.

3. Who else will have access to your child? For example, does the husband work from home? Will he be present when your child is there? Or are there older children that will be in the home? Basically, what and who is your child going to be exposed to?

4. What kind of discipline does the provider use? You would be AMAZED at how many parents don't ask this question! Make sure that you are both on the same page when it comes to discipline!!

5. Is she/he willing to submit to a background check? It may sound extreme, but these are your children that you are entrusting to someone. You want to know for sure that they have nothing to hide. And if they were working in a daycare, it would be required under law anyhow.

6. Do they have insurance? Again, another question that parents often forget to ask about. And don't forget about car insurance, (and a driver's license too!).

7. Do they have an absence or payment policy? Most providers have some kind of policy that allows for a certain number of days for vacations/sickness etc. Make sure that you are both clear about the terms.

8. What will your child be doing while in their care? Do they have lesson plans or is it more laid back? Are there structured activities, or will your child be watching TV all day?

9. Will they be providing food for your child? This seems like an easy thing, but it can quickly become a big deal. For example, if you expect your provider to provide meals, but your child is a very picky eater or has a lot of dietary restrictions, you may need to provide your own meals, (especially is she/he is cooking for other children, too).

10. Does your child feel comfortable? This is the most basic, yet maybe the most important thing of all. Even if everything else on the list checks off, if your child doesn't feel like it's a fit, it won't be good for anyone. Take your cues from your child, and you'll probably make a good decision.

Do you have any other suggestions of things to look for or questions to ask? If so, please share!!

For example:

-Purchasing off the kids menu in a restaurant, even though you're an adult.
-Being unwilling to purchase anything without a coupon.
-Returning things after you have used/worn them.
-Replying on other people to cover you all the time.
-Constantly finding reasons to not tip well, (or not tipping at all!)
-Asking others for their leftovers or for part of their meal.
-Being willing to lie or stretch the truth in order to save some $$.
-Asking for free samples instead of actually purchasing something.
-Re-gifting items so that you don't have to buy a present.
-Inconveniencing someone in order to save yourself a little money.
-Keeping track of every single dollar (or 50 cents), that someone owes you.

These are all examples of being CHEAP!

But, here are examples of being THRIFTY:

-Purchasing something that is used but still in good shape vs. buying new
-Getting a great value instead of just looking for a deal.
-Choosing to eat at home instead of eating out.
-Researching in order to get the most/best for your money.
-Sticking to a budget.
-Choosing to drink water with your meal when you eat out.
-Bartering for services.
-Growing your own food.
-Waiting to get something you want when it goes on sale.
-Eating leftovers for a second meal instead of wasting.
-Choosing a matinee over an evening movie.
-Taking advantage of free and discounted events and services.

Have you done/Do you do any of these? Do you have other examples? Do you have any funny "cheap" stories??

Okay, so first, I must tell you that this post is going to be LOOOOOONNNNNNGGGGG.

So if you don't read all the way through, I understand.

BUT, if you really want to know my truth, then stay tuned for the whole thing. Because I am REALLY honest in this post.

Like, scary honest.

Here goes:

Almost a month ago, I told you that my dad had passed away.

But at the time, I wasn't ready to talk about the details.

But to tell you the truth about me, I have to tell you the truth about what happened.

First, I want to say that I LOVE my dad, and always will. I'm not telling you any of this to make him sound bad or to take away from any of his goodness (because there was a lot of that).

But I want to be honest.

My dad was an alcoholic for as long as I can remember.

A very high functioning alcoholic, but an alcoholic nonetheless.

And it was something we all knew, but never talked about (with him).

Oh sure, a few times someone would challenge him on if he was drinking too much, but that never ended well.

And we never had any kind of intervention.

{One of my BIGGEST regrets in life!}

So, to make a long story less long, my dad went into the hospital on a Tuesday afternoon and died exactly one week later.

His liver and kidney's just completely shut down. All because of the alcohol.

He had literally drank himself to death.

On that first night in the hospital, I cried with him as he explained that the doctors told him that he probably wouldn't make it.

And I asked him if all of the drinking had been worth it.

Was it worth ending up like this?

Was it worth all that he had missed out on in life with his kids and grandkids?

His answer was No.

Then why had he done it, I asked?

His reply: "Because I was addicted."

I had NEVER heard my dad admit that he had an addiction to alcohol. Never.

And it struck me in that moment that he didn't just realize that day that he was addicted.

That was something he must have known for a long time, but been unwilling to admit.

And I couldn't help but think of how different life could have been if he had admitted that sooner.

As I drove home that night, something was nagging at me. But I pushed it away, because I had too much to deal with at that point.

But as the week went on, and as he declined, the nagging kept coming. And I kept pushing it away.

Finally, after my dad's death, I couldn't ignore it anymore.

I was an addict, too.

Not to alcohol, or to drugs, but to food.

I was using food in the same way that my dad had used alcohol all those years.

To celebrate, to cope, to entertain...essentially to make me happy.

But that isn't the job of food.

Food is for nourishment, and I had been abusing it to the point that it was now having the opposite effect on me.

And I knew that I was headed down a dangerous and somewhat similar path as my dad.

My addiction was keeping me from fully enjoying my family the same way his kept him from doing that.

And no one would call me on my addiction because they loved me and didn't want to hurt me or embarrass me, the same way that we did for him.

And if I kept going the way I was going, at some point I was going to end up in the hospital with the doctors saying that I had ruined my own body and that the damage was irreversible; the same thing that happened to him.

I didn't want that for my family.

I don't want my girls to EVER feel like I chose food over them.

I knew I needed to make a change, but it was overwhelming. Where did I start?

Well, I started by praying.

I knew God was giving me this wake up call. This second chance.

I knew He would direct me in the right way.

Then I admitted my addiction to my husband. And to close friends. And I asked them to pray for me and to hold me accountable.

And I sought out a plan to help me get on the right track, and I didn't hesitate in signing up.

And I continue to pray for God to transform my mind so that I will view food differently.

And finally, I am coming clean on this blog.

Because I know that some of you will pray for me in this journey.

And because it's another form of accountability.

And because there may be others out there who are silently struggling with the same thing.

Maybe food isn't your addiction, maybe it's something else. Maybe it's drugs or alcohol. Maybe it's sex or pornography. Maybe it's gambling or shopping. Or maybe it's an eating disorder.

Whatever it is, if that's you, please know that you are NOT alone!

Shame, denial, and pride are what kept my dad silent about his addiction for so long.

Don't let that happen for you.

So there it is.

My truth. My confession. My addiction.

I really do hope that you'll pray for me as I walk through this. And also, that you'll hold me accountable.

And periodically, I'll post an update.

And hopefully, somewhere down the road, I'll be able to tell you that I have conquered my addiction!

Ya'll know how much I love Disney World!

It's my real life happy place.

Nothing bad happens at Disney, right?!

(Oh yeah, except when my kid got the stomach flu there the last time and we spent 3 days of our vacation in the hotel room with her puking her guts out.)

But never mind all that.

I am excited to tell you that we will be going to Disney World again this November, and OHHH how excited I am!!

We'll get to try lots of new things this time because 1. ) they are opening a whole load of new stuff like the Be Our Guest Restaurant from Beauty and The Beast, Celebrate The Magic, Enchanted Tales With Belle, and Under The Sea- Journey of The Little Mermaid, (click here to find out about all the new stuff!) and 2.) because both girls are tall enough to ride almost every ride at every park now!!

Plus, that feeling, when you walk into the Magic Kingdom, is indescribable.

The first time we took Addy, I cried.

Why?

Because I'm an emotional basket case.

But also because I think taking your kids to Disney World is something that almost every parent dreams of.

I never got to go as a kid and I always felt like I was missing out on a kind of right of passage.

And I just knew that when I became a parent, I wouldn't let them miss out on that opportunity.

(BTW, don't feel too sorry for me. I got to do lots of other fun vacations as a kid, and even go to Italy when I was in High School. Rough life, I know).

So when we walked into The Magic Kingdom with her, it was as if I had fulfilled that promise to myself and was able to make one of her very first dreams come true.

Our first visit with Addy when she was 4

And that's what Disney is about.

Making dreams come true.

You want to be a princess?

Then that's what you are!

How about a Pirate?

Yep!

And you want to spin in a saucer, fly on an elephant and ride a magic carpet?

You can do all that, too.

It truly is Magical.

And also, we are getting a great deal.

Which makes it Magical for our bank account, also.

I LOVE to give gifts.

I have said before that it is a gift to me to be able to give someone a gift that they really love.

And often, we think we have to spend a lot of money to make someone happy.

But often, the best gifts cost us nothing at all.

Here are Ten Ways to Give A Gift Without Spending Money:

10. Offer to Babysit! If you have children, you know what a treasure it is to have a date night and know that you won't have to pay a babysitter. And don't just put it out there and offer, actually have them give you a list of dates that work, and choose one (or more) that work for you!

9. Make a Meal! Sometimes it's nice to get muffins or cookies. But what really helps out is when someone delivers an entire meal to your door. No cooking and no having to pay for dinner. Awesome!

8. Do some Housework! Oh the luxury of having a housekeeper! That is something most of us can't afford. BUT, if a friend would be willing to come and do it for you, that would maybe be the best gift ever!

7. Write a Note! Sometimes, the people we care about just want to hear the words. Take time to sit down and write a letter and tell them what they mean to you and why.

6. Become a Photographer! Everyone loves great family photo's, but photo sessions can be pricey. But with a decent camera and good editing software, almost anyone can capture at least a few great pics. Offer to accompany them and their family on an afternoon outing and be their own personal photographer.

5. Get Crafty! Knit a scarf, repaint a frame to look pretty, or put together a really cool wreath. We all love those cute little things we see on Pinterest, but we rarely have time to do them. Try doing one of them for a friend!

4. Give a Lesson! Maybe you know how to sew, but your friend doesn't. Or maybe you're a really good cook and she can barely boil water. Whatever skill you have that your friend may want to learn, (but maybe is afraid to ask you about), is a great opportunity to give of yourself!

3. Coupons! This one is a no-brainer. It has been around a while, and for good reason...it works! Write a coupon book that the receiver can exchange for items. We did this with our girls one year for Christmas and they loved it. Some of our coupons were for: 30 minutes of staying up later, ice cream for breakfast, having a friend spend the night, and getting to choose what we have for dinner.

2. Make a Scrap Book! This one is great for anyone, but especially family members. Collect old photo's, write down memories, and be creative. We did this for my Father-In-Law's Birthday one year and I think I loved it as much as he did because I got to learn so much more about him while I was putting it together.

1. Give them Your Time! If the receiver is anything like me, it's your time that means the most to them. Take a whole day and spend it doing fun stuff with your friend. And it doesn't have to cost a lot (or anything!). Hiking, cooking together, watching TV movies, or just sitting and chatting are great bonding activities. OR, if it's a guy your giving to, let him have a day just to watch sports or listen to his favorite band.

It's Here!

The Monday Soup Swap has officially begun!

AND, to start it off, I am sharing one of my favorite soup recipe's with you!!

Easy Peasy Slow Cooker Chicken Tortilla Soup:

3-4 frozen Chicken Breasts
2 cans of diced tomatoes (or 2 cans of rotel, which makes it a little spicier).
1 can of corn
6 cups of chicken broth
1 pkg. of taco seasoning
1 pkg. of ranch salad dressing seasoning
1 can of cream of chicken soup

Tortilla Chips
Shredded Cheese
Sour Cream (optional)
Chopped Cilantro (optional)

Place the chicken breasts in the bottom of the slow cooker. Then, go ahead and pour the tomatoes and corn over the chicken. After that, you can mix the chicken broth, cream of chicken soup, ranch seasoning and taco seasoning together, and pour over the chicken. (or do it in reverse order...it will taste exactly the same. It's almost impossible to mess this one up!) Cover and simmer on low for 3-4 hours or until chicken is cooked through.

Remove chicken breasts and shred them with two forks. Place them back into the slow cooker, stir, and cover. Cook on low for another 30 minutes.

Place tortilla chips in a bowl, sprinkle a little cheese on them (or a lot if you're like me!), and ladle the soup over the chips. You are now about to get the most melty, gooey, yummy cheese....mmmmmm.

And, just before I eat it, I like to place a small dollop of sour cream on top. It gives it that little extra creaminess. And if you're REALLY feeling crazy, go ahead and add some fresh snipped cilantro!

There you have it!

Rickihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10245266276704235321noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5562822527416296548.post-63261141308412493292012-09-05T23:27:00.000-04:002012-09-05T23:27:26.041-04:00Who Wants Some Soup?Doesn't everyone love soup??

I know I do!

In fact, during the fall and winter months, we have it at least once a week.

One of the things I love most about soup is that it makes a lot and I can eat it one night for dinner, and eat the rest of it all week for lunch.

OR, I can serve half for dinner and freeze the rest for another week.

And BTW, I consider all chili's and stews a soup also. So LOTS OF STUFF can fall into my soup category!

And the thing is, I can never get enough soup recipes. I would love to try a new soup each week!

Which has lead me to the decision to start a Soup Swap on the blog!

Next Monday will be the official kick-off! You'll be able to link up all of your soup recipes and share with the soup loving community!

It can be an old or new blog post, but make sure you're linking up your *own* recipe. (ie, don't link up someone else's blog post please!).

And be creative.

It can be a detox soup, your grandma's favorite beef stew, or a chilled soup.

Whatever it is, link it up so we can check it out!

And if it goes well, who knows...

maybe The Monday Soup Swap will become a regular link up.

So get to cookin'!! (and maybe take some pics too)

And we can all be eating delicious soup all winter long :)

I am linking up with We Are THAT Family for WFMW
