A (Homemade) Cough Remedy That Actually Works!

So I mentioned yesterday that I have bronchitis along with a sinus infection.

Good times.

But since I HATE to take OTC meds for that kind of stuff, because they never seem to help anyway, I was just kind of dealing with it until I could get to the doctor.

But I came across this home remedy on Pinterest and I happened to have all the stuff already in the pantry.

So I gave it a try.

And By Golly IT WORKED!

Let me warn you that it's pretty nasty.

I just held my nose and drank it down.  (Remember to only take 1 TBSP at a time!)

And I wouldn't give it to my kids (because of the Cayenne Pepper.  But if your kids like hot stuff...go for it!)

But it totally did the job, and WAY better than those OTC meds.

Plus, no side effects like drowsiness or hyper activity.

So next time you feel a sore throat or cough coming on, give this a try first!

Things I Love Thursday: Chobani Yogurt!

I have never been much into yogurt.  Something about it always tasted chalky to me, and just wasn't appealing.

But, I know that I should be eating yogurt because it's healthy and it's a great source of calcium, which is something I struggle to get enough of.

I had heard a few people talk about Greek Yogurt and how good it was.  Specifically, they mentioned Chobani.

Image Detail

So, when my local grocery store had it on sale, I decided to pick up a few containers and try it out.

I am SOOOO glad I did!!

This doesn't taste like any yogurt I've had before.  It was so creamy, (not chalky AT ALL!), and the flavor was awesome!

The first one I tried was the new blood orange, and since then I've tried several other flavors and have liked them all.

And they also have Chobani Champions, which is the first greek yogurt made for kids!  And my kids are definitely a fan!

Champions Orange Vanilla

So what are you waiting for?!  If you haven't tried Chobani or Chobani Champions yet, be sure to get some soon!  You won't be sorry!!!

Things I Love Thursday: Vistaprint

If I haven't already mentioned, I'm going to Blissdom next week!!! :)

{Can you tell I'm a little excited??}

As I began my preparations, I decided I wanted to print new business cards to hand out.

I remembered that Vistaprint had very reasonable rates, (you can 250 for FREE!), and so I visited them online and while I was there, I discovered I could create my own logo and purchase it to use on my cards, my blog, etc.!

{I can even order T-shirts, bags and all kinds of other stuff with my logo!!}

I had been wanting to do this for a looooong time, so I was REALLY excited to know that I could do it so easily!

Now I have a new logo, (like it?), and pretty new business cards to hand out at Blissdom.

And don't forget that Vistaprint isn't just for business cards!  They do websites, Banners, Checks, Birth Announcements and a ton of other stuff as well!  Be sure to check out the link below to see what they can do for you!

Things I Love Thursday: Mary Kay Nourishine Lip Gloss

Mary Kay Nourishine Lip Gloss ~ Sugarberry
I had a Mary Kay party for a friend back in the fall.  And while I wasn't really a Mary Kay customer, she was just starting her business out and I wanted to help her.

During the party we got to experience lots of their product, and I must say, I was pretty impressed.  They have a TON of good stuff, and it's affordable too, so that's a plus.

But I MUST tell you that my absolute favorite thing is the Nourishine Lip Gloss!

Now, my favorite color is Sugarberry, which has unfortunately been discontinued, (BOOOOOOO!).  In the bottle, it looked purpleish, so I was hesitant to try it out. But it actually looked more like a neutral when it went on.  I have heard that the Berry Tart color is similar, so I'll probably try that next.

I love it because it goes with everything, stays on for a long time, never feels heavy or clumpy, and always gives me that perfect glossy shine!  And while Sugarberry was my favorite color, ALL the colors are gorgeous...I really don't think you could go wrong.

I am a hard sell and can be pretty cynical, (especially when it comes to home party kind of stuff!), but I am now a believer in Mary Kay, and this lip gloss in particular. And did I mention that it's only $14 and lasts for a really long time??!!  That is a great deal for a great product!

If you have never given Mary Kay a try, I encourage you to check it out.  Pretty sure you'll love it as much as I do!

Things I Love Thursday: Kangaroo Brand Flatbread

It seems like forever that I have been on the search for the perfect pizza crust for when we make pizza at home.

I have tried frozen premade, refrigerated premade, non-refrigerated premade, and recipes to make your own

Some of them were okay, and some were just awful, but we never found one that our whole family loved...

until I tried using Kangaroo Flatbread!

I kind of accidentally stumbled upon these when I was looking for a quick way to make individual pizzas for my daughter's birthday party.  I thought, "these girls won't care so much what they taste like.  they'll just like making their own".

But oh man was I surprised when not only did the girls at the party love them, but my whole family.  In fact, my husband told me to put them on the regular dinner rotation!

So, we have been having 'make-your-own' pizza night a lot lately.  And what's even better is that these flatbreads bake up quick, so dinner is done in about ten minutes.

And did I tell you how affordable they are?  A package of five is only about $2, so it's not only a quick dinner idea, it's inexpensive too!

I love it when I win!!!

Things I Love Thursday: The Nutcracker {GIVEAWAY}!!!!

One year when I was about 15, one of my church youth leaders took some of us girls to see The Nutcracker Ballet.

It was beautiful.

I knew that one day I would want to take my kids to see it too.

And when Addy was 3, we took her to see it, and she loved it too.

It is so much fun to get all dressed up, go out for a fancy dinner, and then go to The Schuster Center.

The Christmas decorations were up, the Holiday music was playing, and there was a fabulous anticipation in the air because it was just one of those magical moments.

You know, the kind that almost make you want to cry.

(Okay, so maybe I'm a little over-emotional right now.  But it *is* just so special!)

I wish everyone had the chance to see this beautiful and special ballet, but I realize that it can be a big expense during a time of year that is already kind of tight.

Not that it's not worth it, because it TOTALLY is!  But I'm just saying that I can definitely see why sometimes people just can't fit it into the budget.

But if you have thought about going, but have been holding off on getting tickets, TODAY'S YOUR DAY!

Things I Love Thursday: Cupcakes!

Today a friend and I decided to take the girls to a cupcake shop that just opened close by.

Have I ever shared my love for cupcakes?

(It may be obvious by looking at me...)

Anyhoo,  This cupcake craze has taken over the world, and our area is just now starting to catch on.  And boy am I glad for that!

The name of the place we visited today is Frost Cupcake Bar.

YUMMY!

Basically, they have specialty cupcakes already made, OR you can design your own cupcake with cake, frosting flavor and toppings.

A couple of the girls opted for the ghost cupcakes that had a surprise in the middle, (oreo or m&m's), but I just couldn't pass up designing my own.

I KNOW I've shared my love of Nutella with you, and can you believe they had a Nutella frosting??

It was divine!

Light and fluffy, yet still creamy and decadent.  Exactly what I had hoped for.  Plus, I got mine with caramel drizzle.  And when one of the co-owners ask if I wanted chocolate shavings on top, who was I to say no?!

Ummm, can you say perfection?

I was tempted to get another to take home for later, but I have a feeling my 5-year-old would have ratted me out to my husband and I wasn't in the sharing kind of mood.

I must say, this cupcake bar idea is genius.  Kinda wish I have thought of it on my own.  But since I didn't, I'll just have to keep visiting the shop.

And I can because the cupcake are super reasonable at only around $3 each, (and less if you buy a dozen or more!).

Plus, the owners said that they are trying new recipes and flavor combinations all the time, so that is reason enough right there!

If you are in The Dayton area, you will want to try them out soon!  They are located in Springboro at 153 S. Main St. and their hours are Monday -Friday 10-7, and Saturday 11-8.  You can also check out their facebook page here.

And if you DO go in, tell them you heard about it here.  Maybe they'll send cupcakes :)

Things I Love Thursday: Disney FamilyFun Magazine

I have said before that I love a good magazine.

Now, usually these consist of gossipy, celebrity, shallow kind of stuff like US, People, OK!, In Touch...you know, Quality Reading.

But I have also found a wonderful magazine that is like my Go To for stuff concerning my kids.

Disney FamilyFun Magazine!

I always find great craft projects, recipes, organizing tips, activity ideas, ways to save money...the list goes on.  I literally get giddy when it comes in the mail and I make time to read it cover to cover.

And my girls love reading it too.  My oldest will sit down and look through it and find things she wants to do and plan it out for all of us.  Reading it has actually become a family activity in itself.

Plus, it's from Disney.  And you can never go wrong with Disney.

{Have I mentioned that I ADORE Disney?  Just checking...}

I am sooooo glad I made the investment in getting a subscription.

And, right now you can subscribe too for a GREAT price!  Living Social is offering a deal that is $5 for a One Year subscription or $10 for Two Years!!!!  That is a HUGE Bargain for this Magazine.

If I were you, I would be standing up doing the happy dance right now.

Or maybe wait for that until your first issue comes.

But a happy dance should definitely be involved.

I mean $5???  For a whole year???  Seriously??? I think a Happy Meal cost more than that these days.

Plus, Christmas is coming, (don't even get me started.  If you think you have seen me excited before, wait until you see me at the Holidays!), and YOU KNOW it's going to have some A-MAZ-ING stuff in there for Christmas!  Or it could be a great stocking stuffer!

I'm just full of ideas here people...

Soooo, if you are a great mom (or dad!), (or grandparent!), (or anyone else who has kids around!), and have made the oh so wise decision to subscribe to this genius of a magazine, you can click here to get the Deal!

Oh wait!  You don't subscribe via email to Living Social??  What?  You are missing out my friend!  So, I guess first, click here to subscribe to that (you won't be sorry!  Local deals delivered to your email inbox everyday!), and then come back here and click on the link to get the Disney FamilyFun Magazine Deal!

And then don't worry about rushing right back here to thank me.  I am happy when my readers are happy  :)

Things I Love Thursday: My Slow Cooker

I love a Crock Pot meal.

They are easy, and almost always turn out perfectly yummy.

I got my first slow cooker when I was about 25 and we became good friends.

Such good friends, that I think I used the love out of it.

I say that I used the love out of it, because eventually, it stopped loving me back.

My stuff was starting to not cook just right and I wasn't getting the perfect meals that I had become used to.

So I knew that it was time to get a new one.

And lucky me, I got one for Christmas!

I LOVE my new slow cooker!!!  It is a black Rival Crock-Pot and it's bigger than the old one and has a timer on it so that I can set it and forget about it.  Plus, it is very affordable!  At around $40, it is a real bargain for all the home cooked meals you will be enjoying.

And now ALL of my crock-pot meals are coming out great again, and since the weather here has taken a chilly turn, I am getting good use out of it.

(Although, I also use my slow cooker a lot during the summer months too.  It's just so easy...)

If you haven't become good friends with the slow cooker yet, what are you waiting for??  I promise you that you won't be sorry!!

And to get you started, I am including two of my favorite slow cooker recipes.  Hope you enjoy them as much as we do!

Slow cooker Lasagna:

1 lb. ground beef
1 jar 24 oz. spaghetti sauce
1 cup water
1 container 15 oz. Ricotta Cheese
1 pkg. 7 oz. Shredded Mozzarella Cheese, divided
1/4 cup Grated Parmesan Cheese, divided
1 egg
2 Tbsp.  chopped fresh parsley
6 lasagna noodles, uncooked

Brown meat in large skillet; drain. Stir in spaghetti sauce and water. Mix ricotta, 1-1/2 cups mozzarella, 2 Tbsp. Parmesan, egg and parsley.
Spoon 1 cup meat sauce into slow cooker; top with layers of half each of the noodles (broken to fit) and cheese mixture. Cover with 2 cups meat sauce. Top with remaining noodles (broken to fit), cheese mixture and meat sauce. Cover with lid.
Cook on LOW 4 to 6 hours or until liquid is absorbed. Sprinkle with remaining cheeses; let stand, covered, 10 min. or until melted.

Slow-Simmering Pork Sandwiches

2-1/4- to 3-pound pork shoulder roast
1/2 cup water
3 tablespoons vinegar
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon ground cumin or chili powder
3 cups barbecue sauce
12 to 16 kaiser rolls or hamburger buns, split
Red onion slices (optional)
Dill pickles (optional)
Trim fat from roast. Cut roast, if necessary, to fit in a 3-1/2- to 4-quart slow cooker. Add water, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, and cumin or chili powder. Cover and cook on low-heat setting for 10 to 12 hours or on high-heat setting for 5 to 6 hours.
Remove meat from the cooker; discard cooking liquid. Using two forks, pull meat apart and return it to the cooker. Stir in barbecue sauce. Cover and cook on high-heat setting for 30 to 45 minutes or until heated through.  Serve meat mixture in split kaiser rolls or hamburger buns with onion and pickles, if desired. Makes 12 to 16 sandwiches.

Things I Love Thursday: Schick Intuition Razors

I have always had a love/hate relationship with shaving my legs.

I LOVE the way they feel when they are newly shaved and smooth as a babies behind.

But, I have LOATHED having to spend the time to do it everyday.

Because even five minutes in my world is enough to make a kid late for the bus, or forget to put a snack in the school bag, or not have time to blow dry my hair.

So I wouldn't do it everyday.

And maybe I would even go a week.

Or a month in the winter.

Which could become scary to small children, (and husbands).

And even when I did do it, I was constantly running out of shave gel, so I would get half a leg done and the have to use soap for the other half and it just didn't feel the same.

And the blades were always getting dull.  FRUSTRATING!

It was all just too much fuss.

But now, I am here to tell you that I will never have to hate shaving again!

Why?

Because I have discovered Schick Intuition!

Image Detail

{I know, I might be a little late for this party, but at least I have arrived!}

In case you, too, don't know about this amazing little product yet, let me tell you!

Schick Intuition is a razor that you DON'T need Shave gel for.  It has a little bar that surrounds the blades that does the job of the shave gel.  It lathers and moisturizes on it's own, and all you need is water.  It's quick, and easy, and it makes me a happy girl :)

The blades with the moisturizing bar are disposable.  So after the moisturizer runs out, (they last for about 7 days for me...it would depend on the use for how long it would last for you.  I shave every day now!), you just replace the blades.  It's nice because you always get a fresh shave, and it is sooooo much better than before.

The cost is a little more expensive then the others, but I waited for a coupon to try it. (They have coupons all the time!)  I think I paid  about $7 for mine, and the refills, (which I buy in a pack of 3), cost about $10.  In my opinion, it is worth every penny!

Schick Intuition Plus Milk& Honey Refill 3 Count

I am a loyal user now, and will NOT be going back to the old way of doing things.  If you haven't tried Schick Intuition yet, give it a go and see what you think.  I'm pretty sure that you'll become a loyal user too!

Things I Love Thursday: Chocolate Chip Oreo Brownie Bars

As I have told you like a hundred times now, I am addicted to Pinterest.

I spend WAAAAAAAY to much time on there and it seems that lately, I have no original ideas because I found so many good one's on Pinterest.

And honestly, why spend my precious time trying to come up with something clever when somebody else already did the work for you.

I'm all about making life easier for me.

So the other day we had a swim party to go to and I had to bring a dessert.

Now, all moms know that when you are asked to bring a dish to a carry-in function, there are three ways you can go.

First way ="Oh my life is so busy right now that I just didn't have time to make anything so I brought this box of cookies from the grocery."

Totally acceptable, but it's not going to get you very far in the 'Ooooh, I want to be a mom like her' competition.

{Yes, there is a competition.}

{I'm not even close to being in the lead.}

{I'm okay with that.}

The second way you can go= "I made this incredible dish and while it took me two full days, it was totally worth it."

Now this will get you much further along in the competition, maybe even to the front.  But I will warn you that other moms will despise you because of it and probably talk behind your back.  saying things like,

"She probably bought that." or

"I would have time to make that too if I didn't have important things to do." or

"Whatever.  She's just showing off."

I wouldn't be saying these things, but I can assure you that others would.

But the third way= "I wanted to bring something good, but that was easy and no fail.  It didn't take much time and even I couldn't mess it up."

This is the kind of dish that will endear you to everyone around.

Why?

First, because everyone likes good food, and second, because it gives them the hope of being able to bring it to their next event and being the "ooooh, I want to be a mom like her" lady!

See what I mean?  It's all very complicated.

But here I was in this predicament the other day.  What would I do?

Go to Pinterest, of course!

And I found THE.  PERFECT.  RECIPE.

They are Chocolate Chip Oreo Brownie Bars.

The name alone is enough to make you put on five pounds.

First, you make a layer of chocolate chip cookie bars and spread them in a pan.  Next, layer double stuff oreos on top, and then spread on a family size brownie batter mixed with hot fudge sauce.  Finally just bake it up and watch it disappear once it is served.  Here is the official recipe.

I wish I had captured my own pic, but they went too fast.  But boy were they good.

And best of all, I was the mom who had that killer recipe that everyone loved but that they knew they could pull off too.

Perfection!

I think I am a little further along in the competition this week.

Until next week when I send in cheese balls for the class snack...

As always, I am linking up with The Diaper Diaries for Things I Love Thursday.  Hop over and see what else is getting blog love this week!

Things I Love Thursday: CubWorks {Guest Post!}

I have this wonderful friend, Tricia, who just happens to have developed this AWESOME method for teaching kids how to correctly write their letters and numbers.  Both of my girls have used this program and I absolutely LOVE it!

The company's name is CubWorks.  The method she developed uses these cute pictures and stories to help children remember how to properly form the letters.  My girls benefited greatly from using the CubWorks products, and so I thought that with school starting back up, now would be there perfect time to tell you about this great product and give you a chance to try it too!

(Psssst....there's a GIVEAWAY!)

So, since Tricia knows *a little bit* more about her product, I thought I would let her tell you about it herself.  Without further adieu, my friend, Tricia!

Sloppy. Messy. Illegible. As a pediatric occupational therapist, I have heard these comments (and more) describing children’s handwriting over the past 17 years. Many students struggle with the basic tasks of controlling the pencil to form letters and numbers in a neat manner, and positioning the letters and numbers appropriately on lined paper.

If you are a parent who has a child who has had difficulty with handwriting, or know someone who has had difficulty, then you know the frustration that can come from dealing with this issue. That’s one of reason’s I developed CubWorks. It is an easy to use, real life tool that both parents and kids love.

How is CubWorks different from the traditional method of learning how to write their letters and numbers?

This is how it works: Each letter and number has pictures and a story to guide the child’s hand through the formation. Some of these images are clouds, apples and trees. Children are better able to remember how to form each letter and number because they can relate to & understand these familiar objects.

This is an example of the story and picture method use for letter “c".

1. Start at the dot.
2. Go up to the cloud.
3. Pick an apple.
4. Put the apple in the basket.

You might say, my child already knows how to write and “c” but they start at the bottom. What’s wrong with that? The way letters are formed is important and it’s best correct formation become automatic or second nature. When correct formations become automatic, children are better able to focus on the sentence development i.e, spelling, grammar, ideas etc.

So,
Correct letter formation = Helps with penmanship and can lead to better sentence development.

Incorrect letter formation=Can lead to poor penmanship and sentence development.

Improving fine motor skills is another area of focus in CubWorks. These skills are important because they help develop good pencil control, which is something else that leads to good penmanship.

Now you’re thinking, I’m in. How do I make this work for my child? That’s the great thing about CubWorks. We have a lot of options. If you have a younger child who is starting to write or needs help with forming letters, CubClub is an excellent choice.

Customized name worksheets, like the one below, have been a big hit with CubClub subscribers. It’s an easy way for children to learn how to write their name. They form correct formation habits for each letter using the pictures and stories.

CubClub also provides numerous printables to improve fine motor skills.  These skills are important because they help develop good pencil control, which is something else that leads to good penmanship.

Here’s an example of a worksheet printed from CubClub. You can do this activity at home with your child. He or she will learn the correct formation pattern and build the fine motor skills at the same time!

Dotted Block Worksheet
Activity:
Secure 1.5” thick foam core to easel or vertical
work surface such as a wall. Worksheet taped to foam core. Student uses pincers finger to push toothpick into each circle of letter. Place cheerios or colored beads onto each toothpick to show letter/number.

Develops:
Arm, wrist & finger strength, skilled side of hand,
in-hand manipulation, open web space, eye-hand coordination, & letter/number formations.

And here is Ricki's daughter, Faith, working on fine motor skills and letter “F” with a Dotted Block Worksheet from CubClub. She participated in a Kindergarten readiness group I did this summer. Faith did a great job!

We also have a student workbook that is geared for children who are in Kindergarten or older student’s who need additional help.

Here are two links for more information on the method and purchase of a workbook.

I hope that you get to visit the site and look around.  CubWorks is my passion because I know from experience that it can make all the difference between a child having a positive and fun experience learning to write and form letters and numbers, and a very frustrating one!  I  hope that you try it out and see the difference it can make for your child!

__________________________________________________________

Isn't this product AWESOME?!  I never knew how important good letter formation was until my girls started using this.  It has been an excellent foundation for them as they learn all of their writing skills!

I’d love for all of you to try this out. And for one of you, today is you lucky day!  We are doing a GIVEAWAY for a one year subscription to CubClub, (where you can get all the worksheets etc.), AND One workbook, a $40 value!

Things I Love Thursday: School Supply Edition

As I perused Target the other day, (one of my VERY favorite places on Earth!), I found my way to the back of the store where all the school supplies were on display.  This makes my heart happy!

Not just because it means the kids will be back in school soon, (and yes, I *AM* happy about that!), but also because I LOVE school supplies!

All the bright colored folders, notebooks, markers and crayons.  The glue bottles lined up for days.  The trendy little backpacks and lunch boxes that kids adore.  Water bottles that are so cute they make you believe your kids will actually start drinking water.  It's all so wonderful!

I seriously have to watch myself in a place like this.  I can get carried away and come home with several packs of markers and crayons, and maybe 20 new folders or so...just because you never know,  (True story).

But if you're wondering what my Favorites are, I DO have a few.

First, just about everything Crayola makes it great.  But one of my *very* favorites are the Bold Washable Markers.  I like the Bold colors because they are extra bright and show up GREAT on posters, which comes in handy for school projects and sports signs.  Plus, they are washable, which is important because you KNOW your kid is going to get it on that brand new school outfit.

I also like the pip squeakes markers.  These are much smaller and easier for small hands to use.  My youngest daughter loves these and uses them all the time!

Now, when it comes to Glue, I am a name brand girl.  Elmer's really is the best.  I tend to go for the glue sticks at home because they are less messy.  But often, at school, they want the bottles.  And have you seen the Galactic Glue??  Not sure if the teacher's will want this, because it is colored, (comes in blue and red), and has glitter.  But it dries clear, (all you see is the glitter), and for my girls, this is awesome!

If your teacher wants the no-frills kind of glue, the Elmer's School Glue Gel is a great option because is is no-run and is completely washable.

As far as back-packs go, there are two ways to look at it.  First, kids often like the trendy backpacks, and many kids go through at least one backpack per year.  If that is the case, I would say to go to Target or Wal-Mart and let your child pick out something they like that is inexpensive.

BUT, if you prefer a more traditional/classic look and you want to spend a little more, then check out Pottery Barn and Lands End.  Both of these companies offer great backpacks at affordable prices.  One thing I like is that you can get them embroidered with the child's name.  I did this for my daughter when she started kindergarten and she loved it!  We were able to use that pack for two years, and now she has decided she wants a trendier one...

And for lunch boxes/sacks, there are TONS of options.  Younger kids mostly like the ones with characters on them.  Now, I am NOT a fan of character clothing, bags, bedding or pretty much anything else.  But this is one of those situations that you have to choose your battles.  I let my daughter have a Barbie lunch box for kindergarten and first grade.  At the end of first grade, she informed me that it was no longer "cool" to have a Barbie lunch box.  I secretly cheered inside :)

I am pretty sure my youngest will want some sort of character lunch box too, though, and I will be okay with it.  But if you are looking for other, "cooler" options, Thirty-One makes some great lunch bags in awesome patterns!  Plus, they will last you a good long while.

In terms of where to shop for back-to-school supplies, there are TONS of options.  As I said before, Target tends to be my go-to.  Partly because I'm there so much and it's just convienient.  But also because I like how they have all the supplies located in one spot, so it makes it all easy to find, and they also have a lot of options in terms of colors/designs/patterns.

Another great place to save is Wal-Mart.  They usually have the basics at the lowest prices, but maybe not as much variety.

Stapels is another great place for school supplies.  The prices are usually not as low, but if you watch the sales, they have some GREAT deals.  For example, right now composition books are on sale for $.10 and notebooks are $.50!  They also have a much larger assortment of calculators etc. for older kids.

So there you have it!  My take on Back-To-School supplies!  As always, I am linking up with The Diaper Diaries for Things I Love Thursday.  Click on over and check out all the other things that are getting blog love this week!
